Excel London, Queen's Club, Eastbourne, Wimbledon and then back to Devonshire Park for the Davis Cup: the last few weeks have been one long but enjoyable road trip for us. We are now getting back to somethng like normality here, dealing with all the customer enquiries and special requests that have come in. There are lots of tourist visitors, and all the new posters, cards, books and DVDs featured in What's New in Tennis are in stock now. Wimbledon Park is a great place to be on an English summer day, so why not pay us a visit soon?

TEMPORARY CLOSURE - MAIL ORDERS

The last few weeks have been extremely busy for us and we have done our best to despatch as many orders as possible prior to our short absence in Eastbourne (see below). If yours has not yet arrived please bear with us - we'll be back in action on the 13th July and will be tackling the backlog right away!

30/06/10

DAVIS CUP, EASTBOURNE 9-11 JULY

Almost as soon as Wimbledon Fortnight ends we will be on the road to the south coast again, to help set up and run the Tennis Industry Association's Tennis Shop at Devonshire Park. Unfortunately this means that The Tennis Gallery will be closed for a few days from Thursday 8 July. We will re-open as usual on Tuesday 13 July. Sorry if this causes any inconvenience, but if you are planning to attend the GB v Turkey tie we hope to see you there.

WIMBLEDON FORTNIGHT

The last few weeks have been particularly busy ones for us with trade stands at The London Tennis & Golf Show, The Queen's Club tournament and Eastbourne. Wimbledon fortnight presents another challenge as we are open all hours in the first week and expect our usual influx of visitors on their way to and from the tennis. Wimbledon Park is a convenient station for the queue and a lot less crowded than Southfields!

The latest edition of What's New in Tennis has been mailed out and is bringing in a flurry of orders which will be processed as fast as time allows, so please be patient if you are waiting for yours to arrive.

If you want one of these, please order online and we will send your copy immediately.

KINGSTON BOROUGH TENNIS TRIALS

The latest Tennis Gallery Roadshow event took place on Sunday 21 March at Canbury Gardens, Kingston-Upon-Thames, when around 100 children attended trials for places on a subsidised coaching programme run by Sue Bailey in association with the Royal Borough of Kingston. The morning began with the youngest group for school years 4 and 5, and by 9am nearly sixty children were present, many of whom had never played tennis before. This was testament to Sue Bailey's organisational efforts, for prior to the big day she had canvassed nearly 30 schools in and around the Borough. The youngsters who attended were accompanied by their parents, and all seemed delighted with the opportunity being provided. Some of the children had their own rackets, but rackets were provided for those who did not. Four public park courts were used, each one under the supervision of a professional tennis coach, and all the children received a goody bag courtesy of The Tennis Gallery Wimbledon. Tennishead magazine was also present, with Jamie Renton providing leaflets and information about the UK's emerging tennis magazine.

Subsequent sessions for older age groups boosted the overall attendance to around 100, and it was interesting to see the children visibly gaining in confidence as they interacted with their companions and coaches. Programmes like this break down the social barriers that so often keep urban children out of the game, and it would be great if Sue Bailey's programme could be supported by the LTA and repeated in other parts of the country.

This great new large format book is an official ATP publication and costs just £9.99 post free, with coverage of all the top players and tournaments, supported by great colour photographs.

KIM CLIJSTERS EXCLUSIVE POSTER

We are always trying to source new posters of the world's top players, but until recently we had no luck getting an up to date poster featuring Kim Cllijsters following her amazing comeback to tennis last autumn. We are glad to announce that Fila have now come up trumps, licensing us to produce a limited edition of 20 posters from one of their shots showing Kim with the US Open trophy. These posters are now in stock, and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. There can be no reprint, so order soon to avoid missing out.

WILTON JUNIOR TOURNAMENT

Today was Finals Day at one of the UK's biggest junior tournaments, and we were there to present the winners with prizes including Tennis Gallery gift vouchers. This is the first event in our 2010 sponsorship programme, which is aimed at raising awareness of The Tennis Gallery Wimbledon whilst putting resources into grass roots tennis and encouraging people of all ages to take up the game. Over 200 youngsters entered the Wilton tournament, and over 300 matches were played during the week in rain, snow, and (occasionally) brilliant sunshine. We provided goody bags to all competitors containing a total of more than £2000 worth of goods.

2010 ATP WORLD TOUR OFFICIAL GUIDE

Back in November we learned that the WTA would not be participating in the 2010 Guide to Professional Tennis and the ATP were forced to make a last-minute decision to go it alone with their own publication. Only a limited number were published and we were allocated just 200 copies. These have now sold out and unfortunately no more will be available. We can only apologise to anyone who has missed out and would urge you to order early in future to avoid disappointment.

10/02/10

NEW ITF BOOKS

We today received copies of The ITF Year 2009, Davis Cup Media Guide 2010, Fed Cup Media Guide 2010 and Davis Cup - The Year in Tennis 2009. All these great new books will be despatched to our customers who have placed advance orders during the next few days.

03/02/10

UK TENNIS MAGAZINES

Tennis magazines are a sore point these days, and we get asked a lot of questions by our customers. Nobody seems to like Ace since it changed and the only UK alternatives are tennishead and Tennis Life, neither of which comes out on a monthly basis so you don't always get up to date information. Incredibly, there is now no UK tennis magazine carrying a full round-up of professional tennis results! You can check out tennishead online at www.tennishead.net (the current issue has a big Roger Federer feature) and Tennis Life at www.tennislife.co.uk . This way you can get a flavour of the kind of magazines they are and see which is your cup of tea before taking the plunge with a subscription.

21/01/10

AUSTRALIAN OPEN OFFICIAL PROGRAMS

Tennis Australia broke all records by getting these programs to us on the second day of the tournament, and we pulled out all the stops to get advance orders off to our customers the same day. At the time of writing we have just 14 copies left, on a first-come, first-served basis.

08/01/10

2010 ATP WORLD TOUR OFFICIAL GUIDE

We collected these books from snowbound Heathrow today after they arrived from Quebec. We will be sending out around 150 advance orders early next week, along with a special edition of Letter From SW19 giving some great special offers linked to the upcoming Australian Open. To secure your copy place an order now for this excellent book.

20/12/09

AN AMAZING MONTH!

We have been so busy serving our customers during the last few weeks that it has not been possible to add news items to the website. In that time, the landscape of British Tennis has been irrevocably altered by the staging of the ATP World Tour Finals at London's O2 Arena. This was a real People's Event, with ordinary tennis fans able to buy the best tickets to see the world's top men in action. One or two of our customers bought tickets for all 17 sessions! One week later, the Royal Albert Hall staged the AEGON Masters, bringing yet more great tennis to the capital in mid winter. The final between Stefan Edberg and Pat Rafter was a marvellous exhibition of classic serve and volley tennis. With the summer tournaments at Queen's and Wimbledon, London now has five weeks of great tennis each year, and is without doubt the current capital of the tennis world.

Here at The Tennis Gallery, we have had one of our most intensive periods of trading since we opened in October 1999, just over ten years ago. We launched our new magazine WHAT'S NEW IN TENNIS in early November, distributing 7500 copies to customers on our mailing list and another 5000 to our network of clubs and independent tennis shops. The resultant orders have kept us busy, and resulted in many late nights making packages. Thankfully all orders were despatched in time for Christmas. Another highlight has been the publication of Andre Agassi's fascinating autobiography OPEN, and our status as the UK's leading tennis booksellers enabled us to arrange with publishers Harper Collins for Andre to do a book signing session for us. Another highlight was the publication of THE COURT JESTER, Mansour Bahrami's autobiography. Mansour is a delightful person and an old friend of The Tennis Gallery. He signed eighty copies of his book for us, and these sold out in a flash.

There have only been a couple of negatives. PPL Sport and Leisure completely underestimated demand for the 2009 Wimbledon Official Annual, which went out of print less than two months after publication, leading to difficulties and disappointment for many regular purchasers. We did our best to obtain copies from other booksellers, and we are grateful both to PPL and to the Wimbledon Museum Shop for doing their best to help us. But the truth is, Wimbledon is the greatest tennis tournament in the world, and this situation should not have been allowed to arise.

The other big problem has been the WTA's short-sighted decision to withdraw (at the last minute) from the Official Guide to Professional Tennis 2010. This is apparently a cost-cutting step, but it is causing great inconvenience to journalists and fans (not to mention ourselves). After the Christmas rush is over we will be making representations to both Wimbledon and the WTA on behalf of our customers.

These two problems aside, this is a wonderful time for tennis and an exciting time for us. We thank all our customers for your loyal support, without which our independent business could not continue. We look forward to serving you in 2010.

23/11/09

ATP WORLD TOUR FINALS

We will be at the 02 Arena on Monday 23 November, but open as usual for the rest of the week. Although we do not have a trade stand of our own, the ATP is selling our Wimbledon 2010 Calendar in their Merchandising Shop in the main foyer at the 02.

17/11/09

WIMBLEDON OFFICIAL ANNUAL 2009

We have been informed by the publishers PPL Sport & Leisure that the WIMBLEDON OFFICIAL ANNUAL 2009 is now out of print, and that no more copies will be printed. We have registered strong protests on behalf of our many customers who collect these annuals, and we sincerely apologise to all affected by this.
